Ilocano, or Iloko, is spoken mainly in Luzon and Mindanao in the Philippines by about 10 million people and is the country’s third most spoken language after Tagalog and English. The name Ilocano come from i– ‘from’ + looc ‘bay’, and therefore literally means “people of the bay’. An Austronesian language, it is related to such languages as Indonesian, Malay, Fijian, Maori and Hawaiian.
